Eating a Pomelo

Pomelos are very plentiful right now. They are a fruit linked with Mid-Autumn Festival, which is Sunday. Here's the most interesting fact in this post: The grapefruit is a hybrid of a pomelo and an orange. Who knew?

So anyway. This is Nathan's hand on a pomelo.

Nathan has cut around the pomelo and is now separating the peel and pith from the fruit. Apparently when the pomelo is cold, his fingers go numb. I wouldn't know because I always make let him do this part.

One half of the peel is separated.

Now the fruit is out of the peel, though it still has quite a lot of pith on it.

Have I mentioned that we have been eating one of these every night? Usually each of us eat half. Although a couple of nights ago, we each ate half... and then we opened another one and each ate half again. That was not the best idea ever.

The pith is very thick, but kinda fun to peel off.

We usually sit on the couch with our half a pomelo, our peel bowl for discarded pith, and watch a random TV show.

None of these pictures are very good, but you get the idea.

Here is one section of the pomelo.

Another view of the same section.

I am starting to peel the pith off. You can see a bunch of big seeds in there.

Now I took the seeds out.

And now I peeled more pith away. Isn't this exciting?

Mmmm. Succulent chunk of pomelo.

Eating the pomelo is a little labor intensive, but kinda fun. It isn't as messy as an orange because it isn't quite as juicy. The taste is most similar to a mild grapefruit. And the cheap ones from China cost about $1.25. This is what it looks like when we're done.

A whole pomelo has about 230 calories, 620% DV of calcium, 6 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein. Now you know!

And then we did this.

Happy Saturday!

  3. Wow! Thanks for the pomelo lesson! I didn't realize that was the English name for them! I also didn't realize the nutrition facts! I'm kinda shocked they are so many calories...Yes, they are big, but they are fruit! Also, I think they're a lot of work so I never buy them and after watching your tutorial on how to eat them, it is confirmed that they are a lot of work! At least you burn some of the calories you consume just trying to eat it!

  4. Never heard of a pomelo, sounds yummy, looks time consuming to eat them however. BTW, you've got a great sense of humor!
