(Blurry) Sports Day

Two Fridays ago (before Josiah was out of school for a week) was Sports Day. All three grades from Lick Hang Kindergarten met at the Mui Wo Gymnasium in the morning.

Parents were asked to come, so Nathan stayed home in the morning so that he could participate.

Daniel and I were there too, but we mostly hung out in the corner.

After standing around for a little while, the events began with everyone doing the exercise song. This is the first thing the kids do at school on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday after the bell rings. On Monday and Wednesday they go running outside instead.
The song is about 2 1/2 minutes, but this is a shorter clip. Josiah is the short one in the back. He is probably the youngest kid in the whole school and since he is also the newest, he doesn't know the motions all that well yet.

After the exercise song, it was back to the teams to begin the relays. There was quite a bit of time where the kids just had to stand in line between events and Nathan and I kept commenting that this would never have worked in the States. Unless you know a bunch of 3-6 year olds that will just stand quietly in line when there is a whole gym to play in! :)

It was quite apparent from the beginning that the parents would be doing most of the work. In the first relay, two parents carried every child down to a chair to shake a tambourine and then back. It was also quite apparent from the beginning that the parents on our team did not have any problems cheating! No one was waiting for the previous team to get back before they took off towards the chair. And funny enough, the only parent (or teacher) from the other teams that seemed to notice (or care) was a Canadian dad.

For the next relay, the parent had to walk the child on his/her feet down the gym.

Then parent and child worked together to roll a roll of something down the floor.

And finally, all the parents held a piece of canvas tight while the kids crawled down it. Only our kids didn't get the chance to crawl. A couple of parents just dragged them quickly down the canvas so that we could win. Which we did.

All the participants received a medal and Josiah (along with the rest of the Green Team) got a trophy for being the cheaters, I mean, winners!

Besides all the standing around, it was a fun morning. Josiah enjoyed himself and I got to meet some more parents. Have I mentioned that I'm actually really glad we decided to go ahead and put Joe in school? I am.
